TRIANG OPEN 7 PLANK WAGON

1949-1979

An open coal truck that went through different liveries and running numbers during its long 30 years life. I have included the 23 different variants that I have, there are more running numbers available , I am missing two.  NE 83670 (1953-55) and NE 76853 (1954). There are also many colour variants available, some can be seen here. (when Triang had plastic left over from a run, the remains were used up by making a short run on goods wagons, which could be sold in various colours).

1949-1951

Origins. This is the TRACKMASTER Great Western variant and only carried the number GW 10836. Note the closed axle boxes, zink wheels and Trackmaster couplings. I have a handful of these bodies mounted on early Triang chassis.

1949-1951

Another TRACKMASTER wagon from Pyramid Toys, this one in brown, the colour used for North Eastern. Number NE 83610. Trackmaster was bought out by Rovex in November 1951 because they badly needed goods wagons for the launch of Triang Railways in May 1952.

1952-1954

In May 1952 this wagon was released with thick lettering, this one is the later thin lettering. Running number GW 10836 It also has the MK2a couplings which was fitted until the end of 1953.

1952-1954

Again thin lettering, (see Trackmaster above for an example of thick lettering "GW" ). White ones do not come up often, they were run off when there was plastic left over from a run of Fish Van bodies. Running number 10836. Open wagons with GW were discontinued after Spring 1954.

1952-1953

The same number and colour as the Trackmaster variant, although this one is TRIANG. Mk2a couplings and closed axle boxes. Running number 83610

SUMMER 1954

Change over to Mk2b couplings and new running number 22132, last variant with closed axle boxes.

AUTUMN  1954

Same running number 22132, but open axle boxes and "R10/13" added under the body and different type form for "TRI-ANG".

1955-1956

The only difference here is the new running number 32075

1955-1956

Colour change. Same number 32075. There is a variant "3207" which is not a new number, but result of damage to the "7".

1955-1957

New running number 47205, longest running number in the "NE" series. Also the last of the North Eastern variants.

1973 -74 HORNBY RAILWAYS CATALOGUES

1973-1974

The Lancashire private owners wagon was produced the same time as the red SR wagon and seems to have used the same red. Why have two red open wagons being produced at the same time? Probably because the Lancashire had silver seal wheels and the SR wagon did not.

"OCEAN" private owners wagon, running number 921, issued at the same time as the "PRINCESS ROYAL", again only one carried silver seal wheels.

1979

The 7 plank open wagon was retired after 30 years service and was replaced by a 5 plank wagon with new tooling in 1977. That would have been the end of the story, but in 1979 it was released one last time as a private owners wagon "PUGH & CO.". This cannot be found in the catalogue, it was made as a sales gimmick and was given  to customers when they purchased a locomotive. It was given away beyond 1979, but only until stocks were exhausted.
